Dubious Rubio's Bogus War on Poverty

I don't expect Sen. Marco Rubio to actually submit a bill for his laughable war on poverty. Rubio's big idea to end poverty is to turn anti-poverty programs ovrr to the states. That would result in less funding for anti-poverty programs. The Florida legislature hasn't expanded Medicaid and Gov. Rick Scott hasn't fixed the state's unemployment website. You think Scott and the legislature are going to commit significant resources to fighting poverty? That doesn't pass the laugh test.

Rubio's anti-poverty plan doesn't actually lift people out of poverty.

Replacing the earned income tax credit with a federal wage enhancement for qualifying low-wage jobs. "This would allow an unemployed individual to take a job that pays, say, $18,000 a year –which on its own is not enough to make ends meet – but then receive a federal enhancement to make the job a more enticing alternative to collecting unemployment insurance," Rubio's office said.

The income tax credit is a tax break for low income workers for low income families. Rubio is essentially eliminating a tax cut for poor people. This is the same Rubio who was against an extension of the payroll tax cut. However, Rubio went ballistic, on the Senate floor, when President Barack Obama proposed eliminating the tax loophole on corporate jets.

“It’s class warfare, and it’s the kind of language you would expect from a leader of a third-world country, not the President of the United States.”

Rubio would have the American people believe that ensing the tax loophole on corporate jets is going to make the United States in Somalia.

Rubio voted against the Gulf Restoration Act and Hurricane Sandy Relief. Rubio votes against people effected by disaster. However, Rubio will defend corporate tax breaks for company jets.

Rubio's own anti-poverty would not raise the minimum wage. Rubio voted against the Senate bill to raise the minimum wage. Rubio claimed he voted against Janet Yellen's nomination because of concerns over inflation. If Rubio was really concerned about inflation he would support raising the minimum wage. Wages aren't keeping up with cost of living expenses.

Rubio's policies would only increase income inequality.

Update: Heritage Foundation Scholar Robert Rector trashes Rubio's anti-poverty program. Rector makes a point on the conservative side that I did on the liberal side. Having the federal government give money to states and let the states set up their own programs would lead to horrible anti-poverty programs with no oversight. Rector worries that states won't set up work programs. He is probably right.

Like I wrote, Rector points out that Rubio's wage tax subsidy doesn't lift the poor out of poverty. It occurred to me that the wage tax subsidy makes no sense from a conservative prospective. Rubio is creating a new tax subsidy that must ve paid for by taxpayers. It would be wiser from a conservative policy prospective to raise the minimum wage. That way workers can spend their money in the free market and no new tax would be created. Yet Rubio is determined not to raise the minimum wage. Rubio's stance on not raising the minimum wage with hia inflation hawk stance.

Update: According the Associated Press Rubio believes people seek unemployment because they don't feel like working. What bubble was Rubio living in when the Great Recession caused double digit unemployment? It wouldn't surprise me that Rubio thinks that these unemployed people decided to take a tax paid vacation after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy.

On Jim DeFede's radio show, Rubio once said that the working class live off "other people's leftover money. That gives you an idea of what Rubio thinks of working people.

Chris Hayes on Chris Christie's Hurricane Sandy's Record

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Via GottaLaff: many people in New Jersey aren't happy with Chris Christie's slow response to Hurricane Sandy. Adam Gordon, staff attorney, Fair Share Housing Center, is suing the state of New Jersey on the behave of homeowners hit by Sandy. Gordon told Hayes this.

There's 75% of people that were hit by the storm that they felt that the Christy administration's response doesn't care about people like them.

Rep. Rush Holt told Hayes the same story.

The harder you're hit by Sandy on average, the less satisfied you are with the response of the Christie administration. You made reference to this lawsuit against him on lack of transparency on how the funds are disbursed and only a very small fraction of the funds have been disbursed. And so i think there's a lot that's lacking in the response.

Sadly, I am not shocked.

Quote of the Day

"I hope my colleagues in New York and New Jersey won't hold my vote against Sandy relief against me now that Texas needs federal aid."

Sen. Ted Cruz

Calling Ted Cruz a hypocrite would be an understatement. Cruz doesn't care about the people that needed aid during Hurricane Sandy. Cruz only cares about protecting his seat. Which explains is sudden love for federal aid being spent on his state of Texas.

Peter King Mad at Marco Rubio

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) urges New York donors not to give a penny to Sen. Marco Rubio. King's reason is Rubio's vote against Hurricane Sandy relief.

"Rubio and these other Republican candidates are coming to New York to raise money," he said. "I don't think any Senator or congressman who voted against aid for Sandy should get one nickel for New York."
I have said this before, Rubio is a short game pol. Rubio will have a hard time explaining his votes on Hurricane Sandy relief and the Violence Against Women Act in a presidential election. His votes shows someone with outright extremist views. Rubio is worried about appeasing a dead tea party. The tea party (if the tea party is still around in 2016) is not going to deliver a general election victory to Rubio.

Chris Christie vs Romney Staffers

Gov. Chris Christie lashed out against Mitt Romney campaign staffers. Christie described Romney's team as "know-nothing, disgruntled” people.

"So all this other noise, I think, are coming from know-nothing, disgruntled Romney staffers who, you know, don’t like the fact that I said nice things about the president of the United States,” Christie said at a news conference on Tuesday. “Well, that is too bad for them."

Ouch.

Christie told The Hill that he told Romney he would not attend any campaign events if Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey. I don't have a dog in this fight. But it is interesting to see how Team Romney is going after Christie.

Dear Friends,

Yesterday we were finally able to inspect our drop-in center in Chelsea, half a block from the Hudson River. Our worst fears were realized; everything was destroyed and the space is inhabitable. The water level went four feet high, destroying our phones, computers, refrigerators, food and supplies.

The Ali Forney Center is asking for financial donations.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Like A Hurricane (Sandy Edition)

This seems like a perfect song for Hurricane Sandy hitting the Northeast coast. Here is a picture of the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Gizmodo has been keeping constant updates on Sandy. The page has been going down because of heavy traffic. Images from space reveal the terrifying size of Sandy. I have been through hurricanes in Florida. I have seen nothing as big as Sandy.

I hope all our readers in the Northeast are safe. If the authorities tell you to evacuate, please do. Don't risk trying to ride Sandy out in an area below sea level.
