How to Help Victims of Hurricane Sandy
You can give a donation to the Red Cross through text messaging. Send a text to 90999 and type REDCROSS. The donation will show up on your phone bill. Staten Island has been devastated with fire, sewage, and a lack of power. You can go to Staten Island Recovers. Items needed clothing, hygiene products, hot meals and baby supplies. If you live in the area you can volunteer. Occupy Sandy is an offshoot of Occupy Wallstreet. OS needs volunteers for the different New York City boroughs. Go to the homepage to find a boroough to volunteer. Items they are asking for as donations to give to displaced New Yorkers. Blankets, candles, flashlights, water, batteries, diapers and wipes, gloves, trash bags, jackets, warm hats and food. There have been many displaced pets because of Sandy. The Gothamist has a page on dogs and cats that need adoption or a foster home. Update: You can volunteer to help at New York City Service. The Ali Forney Center is a drop-in center for homeless LGBT teenagers. The Ali Forney Center. The entire facility was flooded during Sandy and destroyed.
Dear Friends, Yesterday we were finally able to inspect our drop-in center in Chelsea, half a block from the Hudson River. Our worst fears were realized; everything was destroyed and the space is inhabitable. The water level went four feet high, destroying our phones, computers, refrigerators, food and supplies.The Ali Forney Center is asking for financial donations.
