Bullwinkle Live 1991

This is a video of the defunct Tampa band Bullwinkle performing in of in front of La France, in 1991. Gina Vivinetto is the lead singer. This was long before Ronda Storms got Vivinetto fired from the St. Petersburg Times. For the record: Vivinetto told me in an email that she never created the bogus Myspace profile.

Future MSNBC columnist Helen A.S. Popkin is playing bass, in the video.

I'm in the video at 12:21 leaning against a lamppost. My head is not in the frame. That is me behind the blonde kid. Really.

The Afghan Whigs - Band of Gold

Gina Vivinetto likes to tell me I have a Greg Dulli obsession. It is an affliction suffered by many Generation X hetrosexual males. Music blogger Gregor is a far more extreme case.

i make no attempts to hide my psuedo homoerotic man crush on greg dulli. i know i am not the only straight man to admit such.

Guys of that era looked at Dulli as the epitome of cool. Much like Johnny Cash and George Clooney. Kurt Cobain was a geeky guy everyone made fun of in high school. Dulli was the guy cool enough to hang out with the jocks and potheads in the smoking section. Dulli wouldn't have a girlfriend. He was the guy around several girls and no one would know if he did or didn't hook up. He would never say but may write a song about it one day.

I hope that explains everything to Gina.

If Miss Bullwinkle can post pictures of celebrities with shopping carts than I can listen to Dulli. I take the Congregation album over Nicole Ritchie any day.

Update: Dulli's 120 Minutes appearances with Donal Logue are hysterical. It is impossible not to like Dulli.

Music Goodies

Twilight Singers

Love/Annie Mae
A Love Supreme/Please Stay

This is two live tracks from the Twilight Singers first tour. Word is Greg Dulli's personal life was bottoming out. The performances are excellent. I do wonder how much coke Dulli did during the set.

Gina Vivinetto used to be the lead singer of Bullwinkle. She informed me that her old band was on Myspace. I was surprised by how well the music held up. Many early 90s Tampa indie bands recordings sounded bad back in the day. They only got worse. Even great local bands like Monday Morning had trouble in the studio. Next the the Grassy Knoll Gunmen tape and CD and Kacy Ross's experimental music, this is the best recording from the era.

Beware: Gina name-checks Sam Shepard in a song. I'm disappointed she didn't drop entire passages from The Tooth of Crime.

Recommended listening: Sonic Thing Or Two, Mess.

Tampa bands, drop me an email and a link to your Myspace site. If I like it, I will mention it in a post.
