Schoolhouse Rock: 2014 Edition

Legislation has certainly change from what the founders intended.

According to Open Secrets the financial industry has donated $247,774,431 during the 2013 to 2014 election cycle. It is safe to say that financial reform legislation will not be introduced anytime soon.

The classic I'm Just A Bill song.

This is a great parody of both the questions of Edward Snowden's whereabouts and the children's show Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego.

John Lewis: Civil Rights Super Hero

Progressive activist and comic book fan Elana Brooklyn tweets that Rep. John Lewis is about to become a comic book hero.

Civil Rights hero Rep John Lewis has a #graphicnovel coming out about the movement. We have a sneak peak @GraphicPolicy Radio

I am guessing that the graphic novel will likely feature Lewis' years as a civil rights activist. Here is Danny Glover reading Lewis' speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Newspapers Won't Carry Doonesbury

Doonesbury has been pulled from several national newspapers today for running a strip dealing with the intrusive ultrasound bills being written in red states. Garry Trudeau deserves praise for doing this strip. Doonesbury will spend the week focusing on the ultrasound storyline.

Jodi Jacobson has a good round-up of the media reaction to Doonesbury. My favor nonsensical reason comes from the SC Herald.

“I am concerned about the graphic content.”

We are talking about a comic strip. Newspaper editors are acting like this is the torture scene from Reservior Dogs. If this doesn't prove that the media doesn't have a liberal bias then I don't know what will.

Update: Trudeau talks to the Washington Post about the content of this weeks strip.

A: Oddly, for such a sensitive topic, I found it easy to write. The story is very straightforward — it’s not high-concept like [the satiric] Little Timmy in “Silent Scream” — and the only creative problem I had to work through was the physician’s perspective. I settled on resigned outrage.

Texas’s HB-15 [bill] isn’t hard to explain: The bill says that in order for a woman to obtain a perfectly legal medical procedure, she is first compelled by law to endure a vaginal probe with a hard, plastic 10-inch wand. The World Health Organization defines rape as “physically forced or otherwise coerced penetration — even if slight — of the vulva or anus, using a penis, other body parts or an object.” You tell me the difference.

Ayn Rand: Comic Book Hero (Gag)

What every kid wants for Christmas. On Amazon.com, you can buy the action-packed adventures of Ayn Rand in the graphic novel Female Force: Ayn Rand. Amazon.com only has the opening page available for preview. If you want to see anyone you have to pay $3.99.

How low is the price for the Ayn Rand graphic novel? Consider that The Watchmen is selling for $26.39. Used copies of the The Dark Knight Returns are $17.62.

I can't imagine any child or adult comic book fan excited about a Ayn Rand novel. The only people that find this interesting is longtime Rand fanboy Glenn Reynolds.

Tom Tomorrow mocks how horrible President Obama is when it comes to negotiating with Republicans. Obama isn't concerned about getting the better deal. Obama is only interested in appearing centrist to voters.

Holy Child Abuse Batman!

It is amazing no one ever called Social Services on Batman. He smacks Robin around, forces the teenager to battle murderous criminals and (to add insult to injury) wax his legs. This is just wrong.

Frank Miller's Charlie Brown

Frank Miller is not involved. The two page comic strip was actually created by deviantART member Ninjaink. The strip has been mentioned on MTV's web site. Putting Charlie Brown into Frank Miller's world is pure genius.
