Dumbass of the Day: Racism Edition

Two Florida men decided it would be a good idea to dress as George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin for Halloween. Greg Cimeno, 22, dressed as Zimmerman with a "Neighborhood Watch" T-shirt. The very white William Filene, 25, dressed as Martin and wore black face make-up. The photo above was posted on the Facebook page of Caitlin Cimeno.

The Smoking Gun reports that Filene is listed on the Florida Department of Corrections web site for auto theft. I also found that Filene has been charged with loitering or prowling.Filene was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Filene was left a trail of racist remarks in social media.

In Facebook posts last year, Cimeno referred to elderly women who wore tight pants and tube tops as “tacos,” and, when requesting that a friend contact her, she wrote, “Text ne niggs.” In August, Cimeno also posted a photo of an African American girl wearing a t-shirt reading “Black Girls Rock.” In her accompanying caption, Cimeno wrote, “First of all, sorry Hun but mommy lied to you & secondly if I was wearing a shirt that said something like the truth 'white girls rock' I would be stared at and called a racist cracker.”

Sorry pal but you really do come off as a racist.

Quote of the Day: Shellie Zimmerman Edition

"Dad, get inside the house; George might start shooting at us."

Shellie Zimmerman, wife of George Zimmerman, during her 911 call. Listen to the audio.

George Zimmerman In Police Custody

AP is reporting that police have detained but not arrested George Zimmerman. Zimmerman's wife Shellie claims Zimmerman threatened her and her father with a gun.

Shellie Zimmerman's marriage was experiencing problems for quite some time. Shellie was staying at her father's house the night Trayvon Martin died. Shellie has recently filed for divorce.

"I have a selfish husband and I think George is all about George," Shellie is quoted saying.

CNN reports that Zimmerman is in police custody. Police are investigating and have yet to officially arrest Zimmerman.

Update: Shellie told the 911 dispatcher that Zimmerman had his hand on his gun while he was arguing with her and her father. The question is why would Zimmerman need to bring a gun to his father-in-law's home.

Update: Shellie tells the 911 dispatcher that Zimmerman punched her father in the nose. She told the dispatcher that if Shellie or her father stepped closer he would shoot. Zimmerman is citing "Stand Your Ground" against his wife?

The call gets very confusing at the end. Something scares Shellie Zimmerman. Shellie says, "Oh, My God", on the phone.

The 911 recording. Most disturbing part of the call.

"Dad, get inside the house; George might start shooting at us."

Update: The AP tweeted that Shellie Zimmerman won't press charges. Police Chief Steve Bracknell is not happy about this.

Chief Bracknell says of Zimmerman, "The guy just can't stay out of the news" -- referring to the Trayvon Martin killing, speeding tickets and now this. Bracknell says, "You'd think he'd get the heck out of Dodge."

We're told Shellie recanted her story after talking to her lawyer. The Chief said because of her flip-flopping, "There was not enough to affect an arrest, unfortunately."

Money quote from Bracknell.

We asked him if he'd feel safe if Zimmerman was his next door neighbor. The Chief was clear ... "I would not want to be the neighbor of George Zimmerman."

Update: Orlando Sentinel reporter Jeff Weiner sent out this tweet.

Dan Amira, senior editor of New York Magazine responded with this tweet.

Drudge Promotes Fearmongering Post Zimmerman Trial

Leave it to Matt Drudge to falsely claim that race riots are breaking out across America. The image above was taken from the homepage of The Drudge Report by Dave Weigel. Weigel checked the links posted by Drudge and found out that we are not experiencing racial violence in America.

Instead, there are links to a white guy in Portland saying that "every cop is a target," another link to the Oakland protests from Saturday, and a headline from the Daily Mail that doesn't really jibe with the story:

Like Glenn Reynolds of InstaPundit, Drudge plays up to xenophobia. These guys are without shame.

George Zimmerman Happy in Court

George Zimmerman winks at his defense attorney Don West. Apparently, they feel confident that the case by the state is falling apart. It is hard for me to tell how the trial is going because the media coverage has been horrible and I am not an attorney.

George Zimmerman's Bond

Gawker reports that George Zimmerman could soon be released on bond.
George Zimmerman, now charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin, could soon be released from custody after a judge set a $150,000 bond for his release. Zimmerman's family will need $15,000, 10 percent of the total bond amount, to have him let out.
Prosecutors requested that Zimmerman be held without bond. Judge Kenneth R. Lester Jr. set bond at $150,000. Trayvon Martin's family was upset about the possibiltiy that Zimmerman could be free during the trial.

Zimmerman obviously understands that his past erratic behavior has not helped him. Zimmerman talked to Sean Hannity without the consent of his previous attorneys. Zimmerman also posted a photo of a vandalized black cultural center. Not the smartest move for someone whose been accused of being a racist. Zimmerman made an apology to Martin's parents. Needless to say, Zimmerman's apology failed to sway Martin's family.

George Zimmerman Affidavit

Below is the affidavit of George Zimmerman's arrest.

George Zimmerman Affidavit

What is interesting about the affidavit is that Zimmerman is quoted as saying, "These fucking punks." Anyone with hear Zimmerman say, "Fucking coons." Listen to the audio and judge for yourself.

The affidavit identifies Trayvon Martin as the person crying for help. Trayon Martin's mother identified her son's voice on the tapes. The state attorney investigators did not buy the story by Zimmerman and his family that George Zimmerman was the person crying for help.

George Zimmerman's Lawyers Drop Him

George Zimmerman's attorneys, Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig, have taken themselves off the case. In a press conference, Sooner and Uhrig told the media that they lost contact with Zimmerman and do not know his whereabouts.

At various times during the press conference, both attorneys said they did not know where Zimmerman is currently.

Uhrig told the press that, if people are trying to find Zimmerman, they should “stop looking in Florida” and “look much farther way.” This directly contradicts what Craig Sonner said on March 23 when he assured a reporter from WFTV that “he’s absolutely in the state, he’s local.”

Zimmerman called special prosecutors Angela Corey without the consent of his attorneys. Zimmerman also spoke to Fox News host Sean Hannity without first consulting his attorneys.

"We learned that he had contacted Sean Hannity of Fox News directly, not through us, and we believe, I can't confirm this, we believe that he spoke directly with Sean, off the record, and he's not even willing to tell us what our client told him," attorney Hal Uhrig said.

Zimmerman us not acting like a rationale person.

George Zimmerman's Shaken Baby Defense

George Zimmerman's attorney Hal Uhrig is using the shaken baby defense.

"We're familiar with the Shaken Baby Syndrome," said Uhrig on the CBS This Morning program. "You shake a baby, the brain shakes around inside the skull. You can die when someone's pounding your head into the ground."

The problem with this defense is that Zimmerman was never treated for any uinjuries after he shot and killed Martin. Uhrig maintains that Zimmerman had a broken nose. Eyewitnesses Mary Cutcher and Selma Lamilla have publicly stated that Zimmerman showed no showed no signs of a broken nose. The leaked police video does not show Zimmerman having a broken nose.

My view is many people aren't going to be shaken or stirred by the shaken baby defense.

Trayvon Martin Update

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

MSNBC host Martin Bashir talks to Rep. Gwen Moore, (D-Wis.) about the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Recordings from Martin's phone logs reveal that Zimmerman was less than candid with his claims of self-defense. Martin made phone calls to his girlfriend as Zimmerman followed him.

"She says: `Run.' He says, `I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump says, quoting the girl.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thinks she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard gunshots.

The last call was at 7:12 p.m. Police arrived at 7:17 p.m. to find Martin lying face down on the ground.

It appears that Martin may have been running away from Zimmerman.

"Trayvon tells her, 'I think I lost him,' but then he says, "He is right behind me,'" Crump said. "She hears him say, 'Why are you following me?' Then she hears, 'What are you doing here?'"

Zimmerman was told by the dispatcher not to follow Martin.

"Are you following him? the dispatcher asked. Zimmerman replied: "Yep."

"Okay, we don't need to do that," the dispatcher warned.

State Attorney Norm Wolfinger has opened an investigation into the shooting. Wolfinger released this statement to the media.

"I share in the desire of the family and the community to accurately collect and evaluate all the facts surrounding the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. That is why I directed the expeditious review of the investigation which was delivered by the Sanford Police Department one week ago today; areas for further investigation have been identified; and, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has agreed to assist and has been working hard with my office since Friday, March 16. I will also be utilizing the investigative resources of the Seminole County Grand Jury which will be called to session on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.

I respectfully request that the public remain patient as this process continues forward. We are a country based upon law, and as the State Attorney for the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit I am sworn to uphold those laws. As I have previously stated, the public is entitled to no less than a thorough, deliberate, and just review of the facts. We intend to honor that commitment."

This is key: Zimmerman told the police that he stopped following Martin. Zimmerman claims that Martin jumped him as he tried to enter his car. Zimmerman is a fairly large man. Martin is a skinny 17 year-old. The phone logs paint a story of Zimmerman continuing his pursuit of Martin.

Update: Listen carefully: Zimmerman mumbles the racial slur "fucking coons," during his call to the dispatcher.

Stand Your Ground

"Stand your ground is the dumbest law ever put on the books."

Wille Meggs, Florida State Attorney.

The people responsible for the Stand Your Ground law are former Gov. Jeb Bush and NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer. Bush signed Stand Your Ground into law in 2005. Hammer has defended the law.

"The law was written very carefully and it means what it says: You have a right to protect yourself," she said.

Florida elected Republicans are terrified of Hammer's wrath. Hammer pushed a bill that allowed citizens to take guns into the state capital. In an environment where Gabrielle Giffords is shot by an enraged citizen how is this a good idea? Security is not even allowed to ask if someone is carrying a gun in the capital. Florida Republican legislators are willing to place their lives at risk because they fear a lobbyist. That is insane.

Which brings us to the Trayvon Martin tragedy. Mother Jones has audio of the 911 calls made to the dispatchers. George Zimmerman was told by a dispatcher not to go after Martin.

"Are you following him? the dispatcher asked. Zimmerman replied: "Yep."

"Okay, we don't need to do that," the dispatcher warned.

Zimmerman ignored the dispatcher. People in the neighborhood called about a man on top of another person. There was screaming that didn't sound like Zimmerman's voice. The end result was Martin being shot to death.

Zimmerman is currently a free man. Zimmerman said he was standing his ground and felt threatened by a 14 year-old boy.
