Mark Your Calendars

Crooks and Liars has Harry Reid's and Nancy Pelosi's response to President Bush's veto of the Iraq spending bill. The New York Times has the transcript of President Bush's speech. Someone should start a drinking game for whenever Bush says, "Terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars."

It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you start to plan withdrawing. If we're to do so, the enemy would simply mark their calendars and begin plotting how to take over a country when we leave.

“The consequences of imposing such a specific and random date for withdrawal would be disastrous,” Bush said. If enacted, “our enemies in Iraq would simply have to mark their calendars,” and “spend the months ahead ... plotting how to use their new safe havens once we were to leave.”

Two shots everytime House Minority leader John Boehner says "mark their calendars."

Does anyone really doubt that the terrorists won’t simply mark their calendars and wait us out?

I don't doubt Republicans will keep using the same talking points. The Republicans have nothing they can use to make their points to the American people. Bush can keep saying that progress is being made. He just comes off as increasingly delusional. Talking honestly about the Iraq war was never an option for the Rove era GOP.

On a side note: thanks to Glenn Reynolds for reminding me that Bush vetoed the Iraq spending bill on the fourth anniversary of the "Mission Accomplished" photo op.
