Mark Your Calendars
Crooks and Liars has Harry Reid's and Nancy Pelosi's response to President Bush's veto of the Iraq spending bill. The New York Times has the transcript of President Bush's speech. Someone should start a drinking game for whenever Bush says, "Terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars."

It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you start to plan withdrawing. If we're to do so, the enemy would simply mark their calendars and begin plotting how to take over a country when we leave.

“The consequences of imposing such a specific and random date for withdrawal would be disastrous,” Bush said. If enacted, “our enemies in Iraq would simply have to mark their calendars,” and “spend the months ahead ... plotting how to use their new safe havens once we were to leave.”
Two shots everytime House Minority leader John Boehner says "mark their calendars."
Does anyone really doubt that the terrorists won’t simply mark their calendars and wait us out?
I don't doubt Republicans will keep using the same talking points. The Republicans have nothing they can use to make their points to the American people. Bush can keep saying that progress is being made. He just comes off as increasingly delusional. Talking honestly about the Iraq war was never an option for the Rove era GOP.
On a side note: thanks to Glenn Reynolds for reminding me that Bush vetoed the Iraq spending bill on the fourth anniversary of the "Mission Accomplished" photo op.

Did you check out the Captain's Bukkake post that Instaputz linked to?
Today is the fourth anniversary of George Bush's speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln -- the one Democrats and anti-war activists call the "Mission Accomplished" speech. The crew of the carrier flew the banner because their mission had indeed been accomplished -- they had successfully supported the invasion of Iraq and the fall of Saddam Hussein's government, and were returning to the United States. Instead, everyone has attributed the banner's message to George Bush.
I stopped reading after that first paragraph; figured I risked a cranial explosion if I went any further. I love how Ed stipulates that we weren't paying attention because it was (suppsedly) the crew that put up the sign because their mission was accomplished -- yet Bush stands directly in front of the said sign, knowing full well that doing such is a prime photo opportunity. And not only does he stand in front of the sign, but he makes a speech while in front of it that aired live on every network besides Spike and ESPN, for christsake. And during that speech, Bush declares that major combat operations are over.. Hence, mission accomplished! But noooo.. Ed thinks we're not paying attention. What a fucking retard.
I debunked that talking point on my old blog. The Navy did not make the banner.
