Compassionate Conservatism: Wiley Drake Edition

The Rev. Wiley Drake has prayed for the deaths of Barry W. Lynn, Joe Conn and Jeremy Leaming of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Drake prayed for the death of Dr. George Tiller. Scott Roeder gave him his wish. Drake told Alan Colmes he was "happy" that Tiller is dead.

“This man, George Tiller, was far greater in his atrocities than Adolf Hitler,” Drake said. “So I am happy. I am glad that he is dead. Now I am sad that he went to hell, because he had a choice just like everybody else did. He could have chosen Jesus Christ and when he died went to heaven. But he chose the devil. He chose to neglect, he chose to reject Jesus Christ. And therefore on Sunday morning when he breathed his last breath there in the Lutheran church, he breathed his last breath, and he slipped into the presence of the devil. And I have a strange hunch and a strange feeling that there is a special, superheated, super-hot place in hell for people like George Tiller.”

Tiller is now praying for the passing of President Barack Obama.

Asked if there are others for whom Drake is praying "imprecatory prayer," Drake hesitated before answering that there are several. "The usurper that is in the White House is one, B. Hussein Obama," he said.

Later in the interview, Colmes returned to Drake's answer to make sure he heard him right.

"Are you praying for his death?" Colmes asked.

"Yes," Drake replied.

"So you're praying for the death of the president of the United States?"

"Yes."

Drake told Colmes he didn't pray for Tiller to be murdered. Just for the doctor to die. That sounds rather disingenuous from a man that is happy after learning of Tiller's murder. Drake is teling people don't look at me. Drake just yelled fire. Don't blame him if people get trampled trying to get to the exits. Drake shows no remorse and goes on a news program telling Americans he would like to see Obama die. One can hardly call that responsble discourse. Drake desperately wants to cast blame away from himself and the Christian Right movement by spreading a conspiracy theory that Obama is involved in Tiller's death.

Wiley Drake told me on radio that he did not support the declaration suporting Kopp and that he asked the Army of God to take his name off that declaration. He did say that he suspects that somehow Obama is connected to the death of Tiller, as that side of the debate benefits from such an action.

I don't believe Drake believes Obama ordered Tiller's killing. Drake would be Obama's biggest support if his disturbed mind actually thought the President was assassinating abortion-providers.

Huckabee and the Southern Baptist Church

Via Lindsay Beyerstein: Mike Huckabee defended his religious belief that women should submit to their husbands.

"I'm not the least bit ashamed of my faith or the doctrines of it," Huckabee said. "I don't try to impose that as a governor, and I wouldn't impose it as a president. But I certainly am going to practice it unashamedly.... "

He went on to explain that the Bible also commands husbands to submit to their wives and that marriage requires each spouse to give 100 percent to the other.

Lindsay is creeped out by the Southern Baptist Convention. The SBC's recent history has been so weird. I would be more surprised if they didn't have a doctrine that wasn't offensive to women.

Former SBC President Henry J. Lyons on 56 count, including fraud, extortion and tax evasion. Lyon's finances were questioned after his wife found out about the $700,000 home co-owned by the mistress. The wife burnt the house down.

The SBC has engaged in relentless attacks against the gay community.

1987: Their convention condemned homosexual behavior as a "manifestation of a depraved nature and a perversion of divine standards." They viewed homosexual behavior as being linked to a general "moral decline" in America.
1991: Their convention passed a resolution saying that homosexual behavior is "outside the will of God." and that "it is the responsibility and privilege of the church to minister to homosexuals".
1992: One of the traditional, identifying characteristics of Baptist churches had always been the freedom of the individual congregation in matters of doctrine and morality. This had been the defining factor among Baptists for centuries, worldwide. Congregational freedom had existed in the SBC ever since the founding of the denomination. This came to a crashing halt in 1992. First, the North Carolina State Baptist Convention "disfellowshipped" (expelled) two of its congregations. They acted against the recommendations of their own executive committee. Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill NC had approved the ordination of a known homosexual. Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh NC had blessed the relationship of two committed gay men. The disfellowship decisions were later ratified by the SBC, who warned that other churches would be expelled if they demonstrated "unfriendly cooperation". The SBC amended their constitution to bar from membership any congregation that would "affirm, approve or endorse homosexual behavior." This convention was the one at which the then

Americans United sent the IRS a complaint that SBC member Wiley S. Drake, who responded by praying for the deaths of AU members. Huckabee went to great effort to distance himself from Wiley. I Can't say I blame him.

There is also the SBC's attacks against Catholics. The list goes on and on.

Rev. Wiley Drake Prays For Misfortune to Befall Others

Mike Huckabee has an overly-enthuisatic supporter in Rev. Wiley S. Drake. The Reverend is a major player in the Baptist Church. Wiley has stole a page from the Pat Robertson playbook and prayed for his enemies to be physically harmed.

But then the Rev. Wiley S. Drake, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Buena Park, Calif., urged his supporters to use Psalm 109 to focus prayers directed at the "enemies of God" - including the leaders of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Drake was urging the use of imprecatory prayer - prayers for another's misfortune or for vengeance against God's enemies. Now such prayer is the talk of blogs and letters to the editor.

Drake's targets were Barry W. Lynn, Joe Conn and Jeremy Leaming of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Drake has used his radio show and a church letterhead to endorse Huckabee. The AUSCS has asked the IRS to pull Drake's tax exemption. Non profit organizations are not allowed to openly endorse or support political candidates.

Huckabee made a mild rebuke against Drake.

"The saving of souls rather than the damning of them would tend to be more my hope," he said.
