Plan B In Florida Legislature

The atrocious handling of the 21-year-old woman who was raped at Gasparilla made national news. The story showed how the public is frightened when they see lock'm up conservatism and Christian values in medical decisions. There has now been a reaction to that in the Florida legislature. Senator Nan Rich and Rep. Yolly Roberson are sponsering a bill that would make it mandatory for doctors and nurses to provide Plan B for rape victims. Currently, doctors in Florida don't have to give Plan B. Shocking, but true.

Rape victims treated at hospitals instead of specialized crisis centers frequently are not offered emergency contraception, advocates say, even though it has been available over the counter at major drugstores since last year. In the state-recommended forensic exam after a sexual assault, offering the medication is optional.

Let's hope this bill passes.
