Foley's Campaign Money Can Be Used For Legal Defense

Unbelievable.

Federal law allows Foley to use his $2.7 million campaign war chest to pay any legal fees he incurs that are related to his status as a member of Congress.

Under the law, Foley might even be able to tap that pot of money to hire public relations experts to respond to the press.

The kicker is how the Federal Election Campaign Act is interpreted. If Foley's attorney can argue, that talking about being horny with teenagers was part of his duty as a Congressman, then MaF54 gets the loot. Bizarre, but true. I'm not a supporter of the McCain-Feingold law. But I certainly would whole-heartedly support campaign funds not being used for the legal defense of sexual predators. I sure it be easy to get bipartisan support behind that bill.
