As the Wolves Turns

The wolves continue to turn on each other. Congressional aide Kirk Fordham said he repeatedly told Hastert's office about Mark Foley's questionable behavior towards pages. Fordhan said he had "more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene."

Fordham worked for both Mark Foley and Tom Reynolds.

Rep. Roy Blunt (R) is also distancing himself from Dennis Hastert.

"I think I could have given some good advice here, which is, You have to be curious, you have to ask all the questions you can think of," said Blunt, who was acting majority leader at the time Hastert was told of overly friendly e-mails from Foley to one page. "You absolutely can't decide not to look into activities because one individual's parents don't want you to."

Hastert's people are in full damage control mode. Hastert's spokesman Ron Bonjean said Fordham never spoke to Hastert's office about Foley's behavior toward pages.

"That never happened," Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean told ABC News about the report.

Well what did happen? This is getting maddening. Hastert's people are saying that Fordham didn't do enough. Fordham is saying Hastert didn't do enough. We know the blame game is being played. That doesn't answer questions about who knew what and when. It would be nice if someone said, "We fucked up and should have done more." I understand people are fallible. The coverup shows that these people are unwilling to deal with the situation. It's childish and recklessly irresponsible.

Update: John Shimkus (R-IL) denies that Fordham spoke to him about Foley. Shimkus is sticking to his story that he only saw two Foley emails last fall. Spoke to Foley about it and that was that. It's a lousy story, but Shimkus is clinging to it like a life preserver.
