Wingnut of the Day: Sheriff Joe Arpaio

I don't know why, but I'm getting fundraising emails from Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Left wing activists from across the country are organizing against Sheriff Joe because he conducted his own independent investigation into Obama’s “birth certificate” and found it to likely be a fraud.

Arpaio hasn't given the findings of his investigation to the Justice Department. That might have something to do with his investigation being bogus. President Obama has released the long-firm version of his birth certificate. The federal courts has ruled that Obama is eligible to serve as president. The state of Hawaii has declared the birth certificate to be authentic. All you need to know about Arpaio's motivations is referring to the president in racist code as "Barack Hussein Obama." Obama has a funny name. Therefore he must not be a U.S. citizen.

What Arpaio would like people not to know is the findings of a federal grand jury investigation of his police department.

The inquiry’s findings paint a picture of a department staffed by poorly trained deputies who target Latino drivers on the roadways and detain innocent Latinos in the community in their searches for illegal immigrants. The mistreatment, the government said, extends to the jails the department oversees, where Latino inmates who do not speak English are mistreated.

“The absence of clear policies and procedures to ensure effective and constitutional policing,” the report said, “along with the deviations from widely accepted policing and correctional practices, and the failure to implement meaningful oversight and accountability structures, have contributed to a chronic culture of disregard for basic legal and constitutional obligations.”

Arpaio arrested many people on complaints on dark-skinned people living nearby. These people weren't accused of actual crimes before Arpaio had them arrested. The Justice Department found that Arpaio had arrested many innocent people of Hispanic dessent. Considering Arpaio's previous investigative skills, his statements on Obama's birth certificate should not be taken seriously.
