Gay Marriage Legal in New Hampshire
Governor John Lynch signed a bill that makes gay marriage legal in New Hampshire.
"Today we're standing up for the liberties of same-sex couples by making clear they will receive the same rights, responsibilities, and respect under New Hampshire law," Governor John Lynch said before signing the legislation in a State House ceremony at about 5:20 p.m.
Lynch said it was a New Hampshire tradition "to come down on the side of individual liberties and protections, and that tradition continues today." The room, filled by scores of the bill's supporters, resounded with applause as he signed.
Lynch made it clear he would not sign any bill that forced religious institutions to recognize gay marriages. Religious groups will not have to provide insurance for gay married couples. The law will go in effect January 1, 2010.
Gay marriage supporters celebrated outside the New Hampshire Statehouse.
The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, elected in New Hampshire in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, was among those celebrating the new law.
"It's about being recognized as whole people and whole citizens," Robinson said.
"There are a lot of people standing here who when we grew up could not have imagined this," he said. "You can't imagine something that is simply impossible. It's happened, in our lifetimes."
