Crist Vetoes HB 1143

Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed the infamous bill that would force women to have an ultrasound before getting an abortion. The bill was written with the intention of shaming women out of having an abortion. A likely reason for Crist's vote is to gain Democratic voter support for his Senate campaign. Nevertheless, the veto is good news.

Crist wrote a rather thoughtful reasoning for his veto.

The bill places an inappropriate burden on women seeking to terminate a pregnancy. Individuals hold strong views on life, as I do. However, personal views should not result in laws that unwisely expand the role of government and coerce people to obtain medical tests or procedures that are not medically necessary. In this case, such an action would violate a woman's right to privacy.

That sums up the arguments of the pro-choice movement. Conservatives can't claim to be less government; while declaring ownership of a woman's uterus. There is no rational way for conservatives to declare their love of liberty by declaring ownership over another person's body. The Christian Right isn't about rational arguments. Christian conservatives claim to want less abortions, but prevent any kind of preventive sex education. Abstinence-only sex education programs have been a disaster.

What social conservatives refuse to admit is that they have a problem with sexuality. Whether it be abortion or gay marriage: the magic solution social conservatives offer is for people to have no sex before hetrosexual marriages. This is a movement dedicated to telling Americans not to have sex. These people should be laughed out of public conversation.

1. the ultrasound is nothing more than "informed consent"
2. "The bill also prohibited private health insurers that receive state or federal subsidies from
providing coverage for abortions."
Crist has given FL, tax payer funded abortion/birth control!
Read the bill!

I love conservatives that say "read the bill." I support health insurance dollars for abortions. The "informed consent" is nonsense. It is a pressure tactic to force women to not have an abortion. There is no medical reason for a woman having an abortion to view an ultrasound or be forced to take one. And every woman having an abortion would have to have an ultrasound.

Read the bill? How about you either not post anonymously or go fuck off.
