Woman Attacks Obama Supporters At 'Restoring Honor' Rally
Via Jezebel: at the "Restoring Honor" rally, a female Tea Party supporter attacks two men wearing Obama T-shirts. The woman tears a sign that said "Re-Elect President Obama." She then proceeds to shove the other Obama supporter. She then yelled, "No signs."
The woman was referring to Glenn Beck telling his fans not bring sign. Beck knew the Tea Party crowd would bring signs that would be embarrassing to him. The woman fails to have a basic understand of the First amendment or the fact that the two men are not Beck followers. The First amendment allows these men to bring signs and protest. The fact that this woman doesn't respect make me wonder if she truly wants to restore honor.
The First Amendment says the GOVERNMENT can't prevent signs.
ReplyDeleteThe Bill of Rights do not cover the actions of private citizens.
Other laws may, but not the First Amendment.
To be sure, this is theft and destruction of property. It's also potentially assault and perhaps even disturbing the peace.
But the protesters' First Amendment rights were not violated by the crazy lady.
Jim, protest is covered by the right to peaceably assemble. The bill of rights isn't just about protecting citizens from government intrusion. The Supreme Court ruled that political contributions by private citizens is protected free speech. Holding a sign to support the president is free speech.
ReplyDeleteI don't think a free speech case should be made out of this crazy lady. However, I think she doesn't respect free speech. She decided these protesters' were not allowed to have signs. Citizens do not have the right to silence the protected speech of other citizens.
