Quote of the Day II

"It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights, for, happily, the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support."

George Washington, in his Letter to the Jews of Newport.

Washington wrote the letter to ease the concerns of the Hebrew Congregations of Newport had about anti-semitism. Sarah Palin and Fox News should read Washington's letter. Palin's attack on the New York City mosque and Andrew Breitbart's smear of Shirley Sherrod smack of bigotry. Rush Limbaugh played the song Barack, The Magic Negro. Glenn Beck accused Obama of having racist feeling towards white people. Limbaugh and Beck will turn around and make the outrageous claim that they are the victims of racism. Beck and Limbaugh have continued to mention Rev. Jeremiah Wright long after he fell out of the news cycle.

It is easy for Palin to attack Muslims and Beck and Limbaugh to savage blacks. Conservatives view colored people as the enemy. Look at the crowd at a Republican rally and you quickly notice the whiteness. There are no repercussions against conservative media stars making racist statements. Palin and Beck continue to make millions on Fox News. Limbaugh's contracts have gotten larger as he rants have become stranger. Pat Buchanan can defend David Duke and bash immigrants without fear of losing personal revenue. Racism sells in the conservative media. Fox News would not continue to support racism if Ruport Murdoch was afraid of losing money.

Litbrit has her own thought on Washington's letter.
