O'Reilly Supports Ending DADT
Bill O'Reilly is to the left of President Barack Obama on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." O'Reilly told Jay Leno Obama should sign an executive order and end DADT now. Legally, it is properly not that easy. DADT was made into law by Congress and signed by Bill Clinton. Obama could stop dragging his heels and push Congress.
A CNN poll found 78 percent support openly gay people serving in the armed forces. The neoliberal thinking of Obama is how can he appear centrist to the 22 percent that do not support gays in the military. Obama campaigned on ending DADT. Days after the 2008 general election, Obama delayed ending DADT.
Progressives are becoming increasingly frustrated with Obama. DADT is a policy issue Obama has opinion on his side. This would be a win for civil rights and help the President drum up support in his base. Bill O'Reilly wouldn't come out in support of ending DADT if the polls showed a majority of Americans supporting the ban of gays in the military.
