Corey Poitier Calls Obama Buckwheat

Oh, no he didn't!

I seriously wonder if some politicians can't help but put their foot in their collective mouths. Corey Poitier is a African-American Republican running for Florida's 17th Congressional District. He had the incredible misfortune of refering to President Barack Obama as Buckwheat during a speech to the Broward County Republicans. Poitier is now backtracking.

"I wasn't meaning him any harm. Maybe it was a little insensitive," Poitier said. "It's a term that my brother and I use. It was kind of a way of saying, 'dummy,' like when I say to my brother, 'Hey, Buckwheat, cut that out.' That's what it was."

Poitier wasn't making a racist term towards the President. He just thinks Obama is a "dummy." Even fellow Republicans came up to Poitier, after his speech, and informed him that his comment was over-the-top.

This is the only publicity Poitier will get. District 17 is overwhelmingly Democratic. Poitier's fundraising has been so poor he has not even filed a campaign finance report. Kendrick Meek has given up to his and the field is filled with Democrats. Rudolph Moise, Frederica S Wilson and Shirley Gibson are the serious contenders.

  1. Like him or not, Barack Obama is our president. As such, everyone needs to show some respect for the president of the United States. I am troubled by the lack of respect, the insensitivity and the out and out racism demonstrated toward our president since he took office.

  2. Candidate Poitier is not backtracking. He realizes that his words can hurt people, but he never referred to the President as "BuckWheat". This is the media attempt to discredit a good man who is passionate in what he believes in. He was referring to the Health care bill and Congresses process of the handling this bill, which he believed to be unconstitutional. Then he stated, Listen up, Buckwheat you did it wrong!. Where is the Obama reference? There is none. Candidate Poitier has made an apology to the President on camera and contacted in office and will fax. He knows that people can be hurt by words and so he is owning up to it, unlike other candidates that would dance around such an issue it is refreshing to see someone take responisbility and apologize. Why don't take a moment to contact him to find out the truth, instead of recycling misquoted press or call the Broward Republican Executive Committee.

  4. Poitier is a disgrace to his race and should be ashamed of himself. No matter the color, shape or sex of our president he should be treated with the upmost respect............!!!!!!! Sad to see one race bashing its own people.

  5. The Republicans have been trotting out a lot of these African American's over the last few days. They all have been drinking the Kool-aid and sound just like the Republican's on Capital Hill, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, etc., etc. I could respect a Republican like Colin Powell, but 99% of today's Republicans don't like the America they see. A more inclusive and diverse America. People like Poitier unfortunately don't either. They think they are accepted by these Republicans and just don't realize they are being used.
