As the building filled to capacity, angry protesters stuck outside began to scream, yell, and chant. At one point, those trying to get inside began banging on windows as Tampa Police officers quickly spread out guarding all entrances.
10 Connects photojournalist Kevin Carlson, currently inside the meeting reports at least one fist fight breaking out inside. Some other journalists remain outside.
Police were called in to handle the civil unrest.
UPDATE 7:13pm
Police on bullhorns are trying to break-up the crowd outside the building on 1002 E. Palm Ave.
Many in the crowd are refusing to go.
A Talking Points Memo reports his experiences of the townhall meeting.
I was at the riot/townhall tonight since it was about half a mile from my house and I'm always down for a freak show. I also attended the April 15th tea bag party down the street. This was the same audience, very old and very white (half the minorities I saw were in the media, literally). They did indeed close the doors--I stayed outside because I wasn't about to be trapped in with the nutters for three hours. They started to chant "move it outside" and were infuriated about being somehow left out. I heard some people make the comparison that if they can't run a meeting how can they run healthcare? (Is this the next meme?) It never ceases to amaze me seeing medicare recipients holding up signs saying "Just say no to government run healthcare" and there was plenty of that.
I left before I saw any actual violence, but certainly believe it. The few pro-healthcare people who were there received an impressive amount of boos and name calling. "Get a job, buy your own insurance!"
Lots of recording devices out by nearly everyone. Uninformed people with cameras stoking hate amongst each other. These things are designed to get footage to get more people mad to get more footage.
Medicare and Medicaid recipients protesting about government involvement in health care. Many of the protesters organized through the 9-12 Project. The Tampa Tribune describes the 9-12 Project activists.
Chants were popular. When Castor first tried to speak, the crowd drowned her out by repeating, "You work for us.'' Other chants included "Tyranny, tyranny,'' and "Read the bill, read the bill.''
A crowd of 200 or more moved from the building's entrance to the windows outside the room where the meeting was being held. They held up signs and chanted. Some of the messages on the signs were: "Read the bill'' and "No to socialist health care.''
Several of the protestor's signs bore an image of Obama with his face painted as the Joker, an image that drew protests of racism locally when it appeared on a Web site thought to be associated with the Pinellas Republican party.
Tea Party members disturbed a townhall meeting, compared President Obama to a homicidal supervillian and two reported fist fights. Does anyone believe these tea baggers "read the bill"? Many of these people receive some form of government health care and are protesting (what they preceive to be) government health care. The ignorance of these people are staggering.
These are the same people that labeled Obama a Muslim and terrorist during the campaign. Simple fact-checking would have proven these accusations to be bogus. The tea baggers do not care about that. Do the tea baggers believe private insurance are more important than the 47 million Americans without health insurance. Do the tea baggers get misty eyed and hearts beat loudly over the quarterly earning reports of pharmaceutical companies? Have all of them read Milton Friedman? The answer to these questions not very likely. The tea baggers are angry for the sake of being angry.
Update: Tea baggers in the meeting shout down Rep. Castor. TBO.com has the video. of tea baggers in the meeting shout down Rep. Castor. The tea baggers aren't interested in hearing what Castor has to say. They want to shout at her because it makes them feel good. Screw the people that want to hear what their Congresswoman has to say.
Update: This charming tea bagger admits he is an asshole. He calls people communists and tells them to get on welfare. He goes on an xenophobic rant and tells a woman to go back to her country. He claims his ancestors came on the Mayflower. He turns on the charm by yelling "Heil Hitler." Does anyone think this guy "read the bill."
Leaning a bit left, are we?
ReplyDeletePeople have a right to protest. Even if they are "old" and "mostly white".
Get over it.
People don't have the right to engage in violence. For your information Douglas: this is a lefty blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm just deleting any uncalled for troll comments I gt these days. We see the troll mentality migrating from the internet and into town hall meetings.. The crazy tea baggers who want to incite mob violence at town hall meetings are the exact same jerkoffs who swing by any lefty blog, or our Twitter accounts, and leave inane comments. Fuck'em. As far as I'm concerned, when they're in my internet space they don't deserve to have a voice. They may cry freedom of speech, but I'd ask for more intelligence and less sloganeering -- you can't have intelligent conversations with these trolls because they're dumb as a box of rocks.
ReplyDeleteI keep the troll comments to show how bizarre the lunatics are. The best make the Troll Hall of Fame.
ReplyDeletePerhaps my lack of sense of humor for anything troll these days partially explains why I don't like blogging anymore. Like the television, it seems like this medium has become just another idiot box where unintelligence is rewarded.
ReplyDeleteThe way that blogs have become echo chambers for what CNN, MSNBC, of Fox News says is sickening because those networks themselves don't do a good job. When I got into blogging, I thought blogs were a critical response to the state of the media -- a cry to report real news to us. Instead, not so much as blogs haven't served in a large enough capacity to advance the conversation; not as large as I thought they would, at least.
The trolls still exist, though. Like I said, blog trolls are the exact same people who are doing this insane teablogging bullshit -- spreading lies and drowning meaningful discussion out. I used to enjoy making fun of them, but these assholes view that as some sort of badge of fucking honor. I don't feel like encouraging their behavior anymore. If somebody wants to act like a fucking idiot who displays no ability whatsoever to think critically and have points beyond the stupid slogans they've been spoonfed, then I'll just delete their comment. They had nothing to say in the first place.
dearest tas,
ReplyDeletethat's the way we felt when gwb the lesser came to the throne. i shut the feggin tv OFF. My mistake. I haven't turned it back on but my mistake was thinking he would go away.
These fuckers won't go away either and THIS is where we WIN.
Intellectually.
They can't hold a candle to us.
don't go away ....
look what hussey just said ... peer review is out and SOS is going on hiatus....
NOT YOU.
I'm not going on hiatus, I'm just going to Cairo. Which means this time I'll have a viable excuse to ignore everything in the United States (unless you want me to report it back to you in Arabic/في العربية). When I'm skilled enough, I might actually write posts in all Arabic just for shits and giggles.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, more to the point, I'm hoping progressive blogging can go beyond reacting to trolls. Fuck trolls, just delete their comments.
I always speak of pipe dreams when it comes to blogging though, it seems.
FUCK TROLLS. LOL.
ReplyDeleteBut, no thanks. (not even with someone else's wienie)
It's that there's no arguing with them because their pipe dreams NEVER emerge from the sewer pipe.
And ... arabic? Wow, It will ake me all freakin day to read one comment. I had a friend teaching me hindi for awhile .. wow. but i also think if i hadn't been born speaking english (or grew) that i would have a hard time with it. makes no real reel sense.
are you really going to cairo or pulling our legs?
Not pulling your legs, I'm actually heading there in a couple weeks to do a semester of language immersion at the American University in Cairo. I expect to get my ass handed to me while thankful that these grades won't effect my GPA.
ReplyDeleteyea i went and checked out your blogs. TOO COOL. Sometimes I suspect the reason that blogs don't get off the ground is this regional internet bullshit. you have no way of knowing if someone is really able to open your blog or if it ever shows up in search terms. I get different search results for the exact same parsing no matter WHERE I AM. Sometimes only in a few blocks radius and then move to the next few blocks.
ReplyDeleteREGIONALISM IS BAD. Whenever you hear the word regionaism your ears should be on high alert.
It's very bad business that the sheriffs in america have numerous meetings on once a month or more. VERY SCARY STUFF.
Tas ... oh man have GREAT TIME. I doubt you'll get your ass handed to you but .... if so ... it probably won't be the last time and you can always throw it back at em LOL.
Bon voyage .... have a blast
Castor correographed the meeting and brought in all the union, ACORN and dems after people had been standing outside since 3:30 and there was no room. Your pipefitters union beat up a man with cancer and broke the cameraman's glasses. The whole thing was orchestrated
ReplyDeleteConservatives truly believe ACORn is everywhere. There are no news reports of ACORN at the townhall meeting. Do conservatives even know why they hate ACORN or they just repeating things they hear?
ReplyDelete
