"The new deal did not work."
Mika Brzezinski
Think Progress has highlights of Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough make out hysterical economic remarks.
"Would we not be better off being a country that's scrapped with 10 percent, 11 percent unemployment," Joe Scarborough said. The former Congressman actually used "better off" and "11 percent unemployment" in the same sentence. Scarborough's rhetorical incompetence is making the case for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
How are their comments any more damaging than people's claims that President Obama will not get their support because he cut the family planning money out of the bill?
ReplyDeleteShe's right. The New Deal did not end the Great Depression, but World War II did.
ReplyDeleteSome may claim the War caused massive government spending, it did, but it also sent millions of men into the armed forces to fight the war.
That's not to say New Deal programs (SEC, FDIC, etc) weren't needed. But no one should be under the impression that the New Deal did anything to bring an end to the worst economic crisis in history.
