David Simon on the State of Journalism

"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter."

Thomas Jefferson

The Wire creator and former Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon talks about how media layoffs and the internet are affecting journalism. Simon said the theme of season five, of The Wire, was The Sun missing the major stories and running on fabricated.

Simon contends deadwood circulation is dead. According to Simon, newspapers need to charge their online readers. Online traffic is not going to impress advertisors.

The video is must-viewing for people that are passionate about quality journalism.
