The video of the Battlestar Galactica Comic Con is on the BSG web site. The highlight of the show is James Callis discussing on episode when people are starving in the fleet. Moderator Kevin Smith ruins the moment by making an inappropiate joke.
It is amusing that Smith's career is reduced to hosting BSG panels. It is obvious that cast member Jamie Bamber can not stand Smith. An interesting side bit is that Smith confirms that Ron Moore refused to let him direct a BSG episode. Word of Smith guest-directing was leaked (from Smith's own web site) and Moore quickly ended that rumor. Within a matter of days.
I heart James Callis. I could hear him talk about his role forever; you can really tell he knows and understands and appreciates his character in the scope of the show.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I like Kevin Smith's works (for the most part), I think he's largely overrated. He's a geek's geek, but I think he's rather vulgar and often rude. It was disheartening to see Jamie Bamber put his head for most of the talk.
It was also disappointing to hear Katee Sackoff talk about how much she likes guns. Doesn't she have anything better to talk about? Like, I don't know, the greatness that is BSG?
Smith is the wrong moderator for BSG. It is like having Smith moderate a panel for the cast and crew of The Wire. Like The Wire, BSG is dark and violent. Smith was out of place and made the panel about himself.

Bamber is talkative and funny at other BSG panels. It's obvious that he really dislikes Smith. The way Bamber refusal to play along with Smith on the weight lose question is proof. I could really feel the tension.
Sackhoff always talks about the guns. She has a tomboyish side to her. She was a Varsity athlete in highschool. She did say on the another panel that playing Starbuck, in season 4, has been depressing.
I think Starbuck is the best character on television. Partly, because she is sick in the head. Sackhoff has hinted that Starbuck is in love with Leoben. Starbuck and Leoben tortured and inprisoned each other. That says much about Starbuck's mental state.
Before the attack on the colonies, Starbuck was on Galactica because her career was flatlined. If it wasn't for the attacks, she be out of the fleet and probably in prison for murder or drug charges. The Razor miniseries gave information that Starbuck used to shoot up. Starbuck has also been willing to use violence against shipmates.
I'm not sure how much Sackhoff can say at the panel. Her character mysteriously came back and she plays a role in killing the human race. (According to the two hybrids.)
