Ultrasound Debate Hits Florida Senate

Florida Senate bill 2400 is Republicans attempt to make abortion more restrictive. The bill's language makes it very clear that Republicans want women to view the ultrasound images.

The form must also indicate that the woman's decision not to view the ultrasound was not based on any undue influence from any third party to discourage her from viewing the images and that she declined to view the images of her own free will.

Is some pro-choice advocate going to rush into a clinic and knock over a ultrasound machine. The bill doesn't help the anti-abortionists overturn Roe v. Wade and only makes more red tape for women getting abortions. State law requires ultrasound in the second and third trimester. The proposed bill is not to insure a woman a fetus's health. The Christian Right will wet themselves over this. Adam Goldman of Florida Right to Life has voiced support for the bill.

The potential vote will be close.

Senate Rules Chairman Jim King, R-Jacksonville, said he is certain that he is among at least six `no' votes among Republicans in the Senate, where the GOP holds a 26-14 membership edge. But at least one Democrat, Sen. Gary Siplin of Orlando, is expected to side with Webster on the bill (SB 2400), possibly tipping the balance toward the term-limited senator.

Siplin is positioning himself to be the tiebreaker. The man never passes up the opportunity to be the worse Democrat in Florida.
