Mitt Wins Michigan

Mitt Romney wins Michigan.

John McCain gave his concession speech.

Thank you. Wow, my friends, thank you all. My friends, for a minute there in New Hampshire, I thought this campaign might be getting easier.

But you know what? We've gotten pretty good at doing things the hard way, too, and I think we've shown them we don't mind a fight. We don't mind a fight, and we're in it.

I find Romney the least scary of Republicans. I would hire Romney as a CEO. His lack of candor on political issues bothers me. The major difference between Romney and the other Republicans is he has a concept of economic matters. The other GOP candidates are horrible on this. The nicest thing I can say about Romney is he isn't an idiot like the other candidates.

I hope Michigan kills the Straight Talk Express. McCain has no intention of ever pulling troops out of Iraq.

Besides Paul, no Republican candidate has any intention of pulling troops out of Iraq. Worse yet is the fact that all of them (besides Paul, who has no shot of winning) are more susceptible to urgings from the hard right to take our military into other places. Needlessly, of course.

As for economic matters, being a businessman and a president are two very different things. As a CEO, Romney can basically be a dictator -- he runs anything in a corporation, and can do anything. Sure, he's proven himself great on that by turning around the Olympics, as well as building an impressive resume with Bain -- but as president, Romeny won't have nearly the type of control over the American economy as he did over corporate entities. Furthermore, he and any other candidate that proposes yet more tax cuts to solve our economic problems is a dunce. We all know to whom the tax cuts go. The tax burden needs to be shifted back onto the backs of the rich Americans and corporations. And spending does need to be cut -- let's start with the Iraq war. Not that Romney -- or any other GOP candidate -- is going to do these things.

As for why Romney won Michigan, it runs concurrent to why the state is still in the shitter: it's living in the old days. Romney promised to bring the automobile industry back to Michigan and the voters bought it. The auto industry in Michigan is in shambles, it has been for awhile, and the state seemingly hasn't invested in much else to rebuild its economy. It never diversified the number of industries it had in its economy, it just stuck with automobiles until it killed them. And then Romney goes in there and tells them he's going to bring the auto industry back? Uh, fucking how, exactly? And a better question: Why? The glory days ain't coming back, it's time to move on.. Michigan just doesn't seem to get that.

If I had to choose between the current crop of Republican candidates for the next president, I'd probably go with McCain since he seems like he's the most willing to compromise. That's an attribute we haven't seen in DC in 7 years. Though I really kinda hope they all just eat shit and die, but hey...
