Game of Pricks is one of Robert Pollards' most personal songs. He wrote the song about the break up of his marriage. His rock n roll lifestyle was becoming too much for his wife. When she married him he was a school teacher. Guided By Voices was just a music project Pollard and his friends did on the side. Then Jim Deal and Thurston Moore heard GBV songs and started talking about them in the music press. The rest is history.
I've waited too long to have you
Hide in the back of me
I've cheated so long I wonder
How you keep track of me?

I've always been entranced by that: Guided by Voices. It's sad that (stating the obvious) when things become too much for a person they respond by losing the people who care for them. Given time, all this would settle back down. Huge adjustment.
ReplyDeleteThe most important job of your family is to keep you down to earth; your most important job is to make sure you listen. JMO Everyone needs a place to really go home to. I find that with the people who love me despite me.
Ditto that. She probably liked that he was a musician... but when it went public, there was no preparation for the major change. Unfortunate.
ReplyDeletePollard writes a lot of nonsensical lyrics. Which makes his serious songs stand out more. I could always feel the pain in this song. He knows is is a drunk cheating jerk, but he's telling her he can't change.
