I Too Disapprove

This is the language to the non-binding resolution that has caused so many delays in Congress.

Congress disapproves of the decision of President George W. Bush announced on January 10, 2007, to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops to Iraq.

I doubt Bush will even read the resolution.

This is time for members of both parties to show leadership. Democrats need to get off the fence and back Obama's binding resolution. Bill Frist and the Republicans threatened the nuclear option to rid of the filibuster. Democrats went along and did not filibuster. Already, Republicans have used the filibuster to reform ethics rules, minimum wage, and a resolution against President Bush's surge. Talk about priorities.

The filibuster has it's place. The only reason I would want for Harry Reid to use the nuclear option is Obama's resulution. Which sets a timetable for pulling troops out of Iraq. Republicans would freak if they had to vote against that. Which they would. We would see a few more Democrats in the Senate in 2009.

It's also the right thing to do. Americans should know where Senators stand on Iraq. Members of both parties have shifted their positions more times than I can count. John Edwards said his staff did not want him to admit he was wrong about his vote.

But when a draft came back from his aides in Washington, Edwards's admission was gone. Determined, the senator reinserted the sentence. Again a draft came back from Washington; again the sentence had been taken out. "We went back and forth, back and forth," Edwards tells NEWSWEEK. "They didn't want me to say it. They were saying I should stress that I'd been misled." The opening sentence remained. "That was the single most important thing for me to say," Edwards recalls. "I had to show how I really feel."

Both parties in the Senate have become so paralyzed by the war that they argue over the word "disapprove."

  1. If memory is serving correctly, aren't those the same Republicans that are always shrieking to the Democrats NOT to filibuster??
