The president of the Tarleton State University chapter of the NAACP said Wednesday that he and other students are upset about a Martin Luther King Day party where students ate fried chicken, drank malt liquor and dressed in faux gang apparel.
One student dressed as Aunt Jemima. That has been a racist caricature long before I was born.
This isn't the first party. It's a TSU tradition.
Many students and university officials said that it seemed to be an isolated incident and that racism was not a problem at Tarleton State. In an e-mail obtained by the Stephenville Empire-Tribune, one student in the photos apologized to Mr. Elder and said the MLK party tradition started "a few years back."
We still have much work to do in combatting racist intolerance. We can't make someone like another group of people A Clockwork Orange-style. Nor should we. My experience has been that people who are racist have personal issues and have an older family member who hates minorities.
People who think racism is fun should watch American History X. This is a deleted scene from the movie.
