Quote of the Day

"No, but you have not yet had a situation also where you have two clearly defined and opposing groups vying not only for power, but for territory. What you do have is sectarian violence that seems to be less aimed at gaining full control over an area than expressing differences, and also trying to destabilize a democracy -- which is different than a civil war, where two sides are clashing for territory and supremacy."

Tony Snow, White House Press Secretary.

Main Entry: civil war
Function: noun
: a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country

  1. Wouldn't that then rest on the definition if war??

    war
    1 a
    (1) : a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations
    (2) : a period of such armed conflict
2 a : a state of hostility, conflict, or antagonism
b : a struggle or competition between opposing forces or for a particular end

I am not sure the sectarian violence in Iraq meets any of these definitions, either -- sure it might meet 2(a) ... but then one could use the same definition to describe partisan politics in the U.S.!!

  2. And so continues the distraction from the necessary debate in favor or semantics. And this is after Rumsfeld, the Sultan of Semantics, has left the administration.

How about "royal f-cking sh-tstorm?" Is that accurate enough for people?
