Right To Be Injured

The Florida Senate passed HB 145. The legislation makes it harder for injured workers to sue companies. Many contruction workers and day laborers don't have the money to file lawsuits. Going through the state to file worker complaints is often filled with red tape. I know. I have worked construction and day labor and known people who have gone though the process. Many companies close and open under a new name after too many lawsuits. The reason is to avoid paying higher worker compensation insurance. The more accidents a company is found at fault - the higher their insurance.

The question is who pays for the medical bills? The answer taxpayers. Now that's a deal. You can thank Florida House Speaker Allan Bense for this bargain.

Jeb Bush has said he will sign the bill to lift the "unfair burden on Florida businesses." Bush is selling HR 145 as helping to recruit jobs. That's the same sales pitch Florida politicians made about the Orwellian-named right to work laws. The law was made to keep unions form gaining a foothold in the state.

Let's not forget that the Florida GOP tried to allow companies not to pay the voter-passed new minimum wage.
